SETTING
The Glade is a relatively small area that serves as a
living place for the Gladers.
The Glade has four large Walls that encase it and
separate it from the Maze. Each wall has an opening in its center, called the Door
that closes every night and re-opens every morning.
Outside the Glade lies the
Maze with many twisting and turning paths that contain horrifying slug-like,
spike-covered creatures called Grievers.
In
the center of the Glade, there is a metal elevator that the Gladers call 'the
Box'. Once a month, a new boy arrives in the box with his memory wiped.
Supplies and clothes also arrive in The Box once a week.
MAIN CHARACTERS
THOMAS
The protagonist of the story. He arrives in the Glade
with no knowledge of who he is or was. He only remembers his name and nothing
else about his life. Thomas proves to be brave, loyal, and clever, with
isolated telepathic powers and a very limited memory of previous knowledge of
the Maze. Soon after arriving in the Glade, Thomas makes both friends and
enemies and proves a leader among the boys.
ALBY
The leader of the Gladers, Alby has authority over
much of what goes on in the Glade. He is hot-headed but experienced. After
being stung by a Griever, Alby undergoes the Changing and becomes convinced
that they should not return to the outside world. He wishes to stay in the
Glade and even tries to sabotage an escape plan by burning the maps drawn by
the Runners. Alby dies during the escape attempt by throwing himself onto a
Griever.
NEWT
Named after Sir Isaac Newton, Newt is a tall, muscular
boy with long blonde hair who operates as second in command in the Glade.
Sarcastic and direct, Newt spends time explaining
the way the Glade and Maze work to him. Newt supports Thomas's plans to escape.
CHUCK
A chubby boy who is assigned
to be Thomas's guide on his first night in the Glade. Chuck is awkward and one
of the youngest Gladers. He is talkative, innocent and naive, and though he is
also annoying at times Thomas comes to see Chuck as a friend and even as a sort
of younger brother. Thomas takes it upon himself to ensure that Chuck gets out
of the Maze and is reunited with his family. Chuck gives his life to save
Thomas from Gally's knife. His character represents innocence.
GALLY
An
arrogant, dark-haired boy who bullies Thomas on his first day in the Glade. Gally
is not particularly popular among the Gladers. Thomas and the other escapees
encounter Gally again after escaping the Maze. Gally throws a knife at Thomas,
but Chuck steps in the way and is killed. Thomas then attacks and beats Gally
mercilessly.
TERESA
A teenage girl who
mysteriously arrives in the Glade the day after Thomas. She tells everyone that
everything is about to change, before slipping into a coma. Thomas is sure that
he knows Teresa from before, but cannot remember. Later, it is revealed that she
shares a telepathic link with Thomas. They become close friends over the course
of the novel and Teresa helps Thomas and Chuck deactivate the Maze during their
escape. She is the only female character in almost the entire book.
The individuals who designed
the experiments conducted on the Gladers, the ones who imprisoned them in the
Glade. Thomas, Teresa, and Chuck encounter a few of them after escaping the
Maze. They are described as having pale, deathly faces that betray little
emotion.
SHORT PLOT SUMMARY
Thomas wakes up in an
elevator and can only remember his name. He can't remember anything else-where
he came from or who his parents were or what happened before he woke up.
When he gets out of the elevator he finds himself in the glade. Thomas is accepted into the "Glade," full of other teenage boys who call themselves "Gladers." After learning about the Maze, Thomas becomes obsessed with finding a way out; which could mean certain death.
The other gladers are like Thomas-they have no memory of their life before entering the glade. There is a maze that surrounds the glade, and each day the gladers try to solve the mystery of the maze to see if there is a way out of the glade.
After Thomas arrives, the first girl appears and before collapsing says: "everything will change." Thomas works with the other gladers to solve the mystery of the maze, the girl dire message to remember his life before entering this strange new world.

CONFLICT
In the book '' The Maze Runner'' there are a ton of conflicts. Some of the little conflicts include children's memories getting erased and not knowing how they got to the mysterious village which everyone lives in. Overall the main conflict is the fact that all of the children are basically trapped in their village. There is a big wall that opens every day. On other side of the wall is the maze. There are runners that will go out into the maze to see if they can find an exit to the real world. This is really hard considering the maze changes its shape every day. This is the maze children versus the makers of the maze.
The Maze
Runner's main conflict is escaping the Maze. Most of the inhabitants
have been stuck there for two years by W.I.C.K.E.D. The only safe place is the
Glade which by the end is not safe due to the creators (W.I.C.K.E.D) no longer
shutting the gates. The Maze is filled with Grievers which can kill. Now it is imperative to get out as
soon as possible.
RESOLUTION
The conflict gets
resolved when they find the exit to the real world located in the maze. The
conflict that cannot be fixed is the fact that all of their memories have been
erased. Some of the kids try and get stung be the mystical creatures in the
maze due to the fact that it will give you flashbacks of your past. Thomas, the
main character, discovers something horrible from his past in this process.
Although the main conflict had been solved by escaping the maze, this doesn't
mean there aren't going to be worse problems in the future.
